Cook unbeaten on 46, England 72-3 vs Pakistan in 1st test

LONDON (AP) Alastair Cook was holding England's innings together on Thursday after Pakistan took three cheap wickets before lunch to leave the home team on 72-3 on the opening day of the first test at Lord's.

Playing a record-leveling 153rd consecutive test match, Cook was on 46 not out and delighted the crowd at the home of cricket with nine boundaries - some of them exquisite front-foot drives through the covers in difficult batting conditions.

Pakistan was having more joy at the other end of the crease, with Mohammad Abbas clean-bowling opener Mark Stoneman for 4 with the last ball of the fourth over before fit-again paceman Hasan Ali removed Joe Root (4) and Dawid Malan (6) by enticing edges behind.
