Newcastle United-Watford Preview

Following a much-needed victory, Watford might be in position to secure enough safety from relegation.

Looking to win back-to-back Premier League games for the first time since January, the Hornets face Newcastle United on Saturday at Vicarage Road.

Watford (7-10-17) were amidst a 1-3-7 stretch and trying to end an 0-1-4 rut when they pulled off a 2-1 victory over lowly Norwich City on Tuesday. After Craig Dawson leveled the match in the 10th minute, Danny Welbeck's stunning 55th-minute score proved to stand as the winner for the Hornets - their first top-flight victory since Feb. 29.

More importantly, the triumph put Watford four points above the relegation zone as of Thursday morning. The Hornets last won consecutive league contests during a three-match winning streak from Dec. 28-Jan. 12.

"Whenever you win a game, it's bound to bring some positive aspects, but we know our situation, we know we're in a difficult situation," manager Nigel Pearson told Watford's official website. "Teams are fighting for their lives, we've got to make sure our own performances give us the best chance of winning games - and that's the bottom line.

"We know what we've got to do. We've got to win enough points ourselves so it's about keeping that focus. I'm not wasting any energy in thinking or discussing anything else. It's about what we do ourselves, that's the important thing."

Though Watford managed a 1-1 draw at Newcastle way back on Aug. 31, the Magpies had looked sharp whilst amidst a 3-3-0 league stretch that ended with Wednesday's brutal 5-0 thrashing at the hands of Manchester City.

Newcastle (11-10-13), 13th in the table on a sturdy 43 points, had outscored their opponents 10-4 while going 2-2-0 since the Premier League's return to play before being roughed up by mighty City.

"Obviously it's not very nice," veteran Danny Rose told Newcastle's official website. "Considering the run that we've been on. We'd play some pretty good football since we've come back. Obviously (Wednesday) was a difficult state ... It's very disappointing. We just have to sit ourselves down and put it right on Saturday."

The Magpies last dropped consecutive matches on Feb. 16 and 22. They're also 0-3-2 at Watford during the Premier League era.

Fabian Schar scored Newcastle's lone goal in the reverse fixture with Watford, who got their goal from Will Hughes on the second minute of the contest.

Dawson has scored both of his Premier League goals for Watford during the five games on its "Project Restart."
