Scouting Report

OVERVIEW
The 2020-21 Atlantic Coast Conference Defensive Player of the Year, Alvarado was the emotional leader of a Yellow Jackets' team that pieced together a late-season run and stunned almost everyone by winning the ACC Tournament.
Alvarado's calling card is his defense. He can steal the ball seemingly at will but also did a good job his last two years of cutting his foul rate down. His 226 steals rank third for a career in school history.
By reducing his fouls, Alvarado was able to stay on the floor longer. He played the full 40 minutes 24 times in his career and averaged nearly 37 minutes per game as a senior.
On offense, Alvarado averaged a career-high 15.2 ppg in 20-21, hitting just over 50 percent of his shots, a great percentage for a 6-0 point guard. Alvarado improved his 3-point shooting to nearly 39 percent and doled out two assists for every turnover, an ideal rate for the guy running an offense.
ANALYSIS
Positives: Good on-ball defender who showed in college he can disrupt an opponents' offense. Made improvements throughout his career to cut down his fouling and became a more efficient shooter. Also proved he can be an extension of his coach on the floor.
Negatives: His lack of size could be bothersome in the modern NBA, where point guards might have several inches on him. Alvarado tends to gamble more than he should and can be too deferential at times on offense. He also has trouble at times beating his man to the basket.
