SNAPSHOT: Committed to Missouri coming out of high school, but didn't qualify academically so went to JC and emerged again at the FBS level at SMU, stepping into the starting role immediately as a junior. Performance was solid in 2020, but took his game to a higher level in 2021. Earned first team All-AAC honors and an invite to the Senior Bowl along with his Mustang running mates Reggie Roberson and Grant Calcaterra.
Strengths: Easy strider, explosive coming out of his stance. Eats through cushion quickly and makes cornerbacks work overtime to stay in control. Hand-eye coordination is adequate for adjusting to off target passes. Hands catcher who frames the ball well. Smart with his body language and won't tip off defenders. Good deep threat who can track and adjust for poorly thrown passes. Agility is going to catch defensive backs by surprise.
Weaknesses: Size is below average for an NFL receiver and he will likely have a hard time adding weight. Doesn't lack effort after the catch, but isn't big or strong enough to create through contact. Too easily knocked off his route due to play strength limitations. Struggles to win in contested situations.
PRO COMP: John Hightower, Eagles - Hightower was a junior college import with deep speed and kick returning ability but hasn't produced at a high level yet. With similar questionable contested catch ability and play strength, Gray will need to get bigger, stronger, and prove versatile enough to warrant a backup role early in his career.
