For Hernandez, it was love at first ride when she initially began snowboarding at the age of eight. She was able to work on her skills on the slopes every day after getting accepted to Vermont's Stratton Mountain School as an eighth grader. Following her graduation in 2010, Hernandez began to zero in on her dream of making the U.S. team - a dream which became a reality two years later when she was named to the squad after winning six of eight NorAm competitions. Hernandez quickly climbed the ranks of the World Cup circuit, ending with an impressive win at the final World Cup event of the 2012 season. Upon her return from a broken arm suffered during competition, Hernandez turned her focus to qualifying for the Sochi Games in snowboardcross. Hernandez, who rides a Harley Davidson in her free time, spent her summer training five days a week or more at the USSA’s Center of Excellence in Salt Lake City. Now she has accomplished another goal: Being handpicked by U.S. coaches for her first Olympic berth based on her top-20 ranking in the FIS standings.
