Winter Games Athletes
Another Winter Games, another Olympic appearance by a Goergl. Elisabeth is already a two-time bronze medalist on skiing's biggest stage, coming in third in both the downhill and giant slalom at the Vancouver Games. She also participated at Turin in 2006 along with her brother, Stephan. In fact, Goergl is actually the third member of her nuclear family to compete at the Olympics, as her mother, Traudl Hecher, also won bronze in the downhill at both the 1960 Squaw Valley and 1964 Innsbruck Games. Along with her Olympic accomplishments, the younger Goergl has thrived in international competition. She has six victories spanning three different disciplines in World Cup races dating back to 2008, winning two apiece in the downhill, giant slalom and super-G. A fast start to 2014 - she's already won a pair of World Cup events this season - has made her a legitimate contender for Sochi. Goergl took first in the downhill and super-G last month as she builds momentum coming into Russia. In 2011, Goergl was named Austrian Sportswoman of the Year after winning gold in the downhill and super-G at the world championships earlier that year.
