Winter Games Athletes
Thompson heads to Sochi for her first Olympics and brings high expectations with her, looking to medal in the discipline of ski cross. She began skiing at the age of two - both her parents were ski instructors - but didn't take up ski cross until she says she got bored with Alpine racing at 16. Thompson has been on quite a tear since winning silver at the world championships last year, finishing on the podium seven times in her last 15 competitions with four victories. She has been outside the top 10 only once in that span and counts a gold medal at the junior worlds among her victories. Thompson placed fifth at her only X Games competition in 2012. She won the World Cup Crystal Globe as the top ski cross athlete during the 2011-12 season - the first Canadian, male or female, to do so - and was also third overall in freestyle that same year. She has won twice on the World Cup circuit this season and been on the podium in two other FIS competitions.
