Winter Games Athletes
After falls prevented her from reaching her goal at the previous two Olympics, Maltais has her sights set on the gold medal in the snowboardcross event in Sochi. Maltais made it to the finals at Turin in 2006, but she crashed around a corner and had to settle for bronze. She fared much worse in Vancouver in 2010, falling in each of her two preliminary heats and failing to qualify for the final race. Maltais decided to take four months off following the games in order to refocus, and now she may be looking at her final attempt to win gold at Sochi. Maltais has competed well since Vancouver, taking bronze at the 2011 world championships before winning gold at the 2012 Winter X Games. She took silver at the 2013 worlds, part of a successful year that saw her win several competitions. Maltais is a full-time firefighter when she's not training for the Olympics, and she plans to continue that career when she's finished snowboarding.
