Winter Games Athletes
A five-discipline skier with podium hopes in the slalom and super-combined, Kostelic returns for his fourth Winter Games - and a shot at a fourth medal - at age 34. His previous three medals have all been silver as he made the podium in the slalom and super-combined at Vancouver four years ago after earning his first in the 2006 combined at Turin. Despite such lofty accomplishments, a fourth Olympic medal would still leave him two behind younger sister, Janica, who retired in 2007 with six. Kostelic’s success in major championships spans more than a decade. He won his first of three world championship medals in 2003 with gold in the slalom, capping that in 2013 with a silver in the combined. On the World Cup circuit, Kostelic’s career peaked in 2011 when he won the overall title, finished the season first in slalom and combined, and third in the super-G. Through 2013, he’s finished first in the combined season standings for three straight years while also making the top three in slalom. He’s been in the overall top five for five straight seasons. In all, he’s won 26 World Cup races spanning a dozen years.
