Winter Games Athletes
One half of the skating Mulders with twin brother Ronald, Michel is a bit of a sleeper heading into the Sochi Games in both the 500 and 1,000 meters. He enjoyed some recent World Cup success while ranking in the top 5 on the circuit, and also made a major statement when he won the 2013 world sprint championships. However, Mulder hopes to improve on his two-race time of 69.91 seconds that left him with a fourth-place finish at the 2013 world single distance championships held on the same Sochi oval he'll skate during the Olympics. He finished second in the same race in the same event one year earlier when he recorded a combined time of 69.65. That 2012 effort proved that Mulder is capable of challenging the world's elite and has a legitimate shot, along with teammate Jan Smeekens, to reach the podium in the 500 in Sochi. Like a number of international speedskaters, Mulder has also enjoyed success as an inline skater.
