Hailing from the same east-central Illinois community that produced U.S. speedskating superstar Bonnie Blair, Kuck enjoyed his first taste of Olympic success in Vancouver in 2010 when he joined current U.S. teammate Brian Hansen, Chad Hedrick and Trevor Marsicano to win silver in the team pursuit. He also finished eighth in the 10,000 meters in Vancouver in a time of 13:31.78. This time in Sochi, Kuck hopes his Olympic success will come on an individual level, but in a different event. He won the 5,000 at the recent U.S. Olympic trials in a time of 6:19.76 _ more than 6 seconds faster than his closest pursuer. Though Sven Kramer of the Netherlands is a heavy favorite to win gold in Sochi in the 5,000, Kuck has a chance to sneak onto the podium for the silver or bronze. A 13-time World Cup medalist, Kuck finished third in the event at the 2012 World Single Distance championships. He also earned bronze in the 10,000 at the same competition. A silver medalist at the 2009-10 World Allround championships, Kuck set a personal best in November 2013 when he skated the 5,000 in 6:09.73. He set a career high in the 3,000 with a time of 3:40.77 on Oct. 19, 2013. Kuck won a silver medal at the 2009 World Allround Junior championships just one season after he began his competitive career on the international level.
