Smith, the American short track record-holder in the 500 meters, is making her first Olympic appearance - and she'll likely be joined in Sochi by her controversial coach, Jae Su Chun. The 30-year-old Smith stuck with the former U.S. coach after allegations of physical, emotional and verbal abuse by a dozen teammates in 2012. Chun also allegedly ordered skater Simon Cho, a bronze medalist at the 2010 Vancouver Games, to sabotage Canadian Oliver Jean's skates during the 2011 world team championships. Chun has denied the allegations and other U.S. team members have defended him, yet he is still serving a two-year suspension from the International Skating Union that runs until August 2015. He was allowed to be in the stands during the U.S. trials, but Smith had to work with another coach on the ice. In Sochi, she'll compete in all three individual events and will do so with a small tear in her left hip. Smith is holding off surgery until after the Olympics. She's earned 12 of her 15 major international medals in relays - including two golds - or at team championships. Smith finished third in a pair of 500-meter races during the 2011-12 World Cup season and earned another World Cup bronze in the 1,000 in Sept. 2009.
